Selux: Smart Lighting
For Light + Building 2018, Selux presented its Smart Lighting concept through a flip-dot installation. I worked on the concept, moving-image design, and code for the presentation.
Project
Smart Lighting describes connected urban lighting as part of a wider digital infrastructure. The exhibition format translated that abstract subject into something physical: a wall of mechanical dots that could switch between light and dark states.
The project used the grid and movement of the display as its visual language. Alongside the installation, I created an explanatory video that carried the same aesthetic into a conventional screen format.
What was created
The work combined coded sequences for the physical flip-dot wall with a film explaining Selux’s Smart Lighting concept. At the fair, digital information became mechanical movement across the installation; the companion film carried the same black-and-white dot language into a linear narrative.
Looking back
The flip-dot wall could not reproduce a normal video, and that was exactly what made it interesting. Every sequence had to work with a coarse black-and-white grid and the physical delay of moving dots. The explanatory film could be more fluid, but it still had to feel as if it belonged to the same system.
